Links are the lifeblood of the Internet. Links are the tools which make the Internet possible; without links, no one could find anything. A link is simple the connective tissue that lets people thousands of miles from you find a page on your website the same as those in your hometown. It is the means by which like-minded people can connect like never in history through social media. Links help people both find your website and find related information on your website.
Of equal importance, however, is creating written content on your site in such a way that people can find other sites with useful information. Adding these external links not only adds value to your web pages for readers, but also permits the search engines to see that your site is more valuable. In other words, external links help you get noticed and recommended in the search results.
Adding Links to a Website Need not be Difficult
The usual way of adding links is to find a website or web page that you want to include in the content, then copying the address and clicking on the “Link” button in your page editing screen. But many people who create web pages, expecially professionals, do not always rely on other sources for their information. For instance, in writing this post, I rely on knowledge I have acquired over the course of the last several years. Looking up related pages to add as references would be both time-consuming and false.
What is the solution?
When adding external links, all that is needed is to refer readers to related, though not identical information. This could be a word or phrase such as mentioning WordPress. Anyone reading this may want to learn more about WordPress. If that is the case, I could quickly create a link using the domain I know by heart or I could use an even simpler method.
If your website is built in WordPress, following is a very simple, quick, and effective way to add links. Zemanta, now Sovrn, is a company which provides several plugins of use to website builders. It is easily added to a WordPress website by going to “Add Plugins” and searching “Zemanta” or “Sovrn.” Add the one called “Editorial Assistant by Sovrn.” This adds a section at the bottom of the page for In-Text Links (see image).
The beauty of this plugin is that in most cases, the recommended links will be non-competitive. Adding them to your web page is as simple as clicking on the desired links. For instance, in this blog post you will notice that “WordPress” is linked. Note the image above. The first recommended link is “WordPress” and it has a home icon beside it. This tells me that the link is to the WordPress Home page. Still others show a “W” beside them. These are links to Wikipedia articles of that name.
The point is that by using the Sovrn plugin, you can very quickly and easily add non-competing links to your website which adds value for readers and generate value for the site with search engines.
